The Most Famous Lunch in All of History

Mark 6:30-44

The packing of a lunch is a rather commonplace thing (My High School lunch).

This evening, I want to talk to you about the most famous lunch in all of history.

a. It was carried by a Jewish lad in the long ago when he traveled a long distance to hear our Lord teach.

b. We do not know who packed his lunch, whether it was done by a loving mother in the early hours of the dawn or whether he did it himself.

c. We do not know where it was packed, but we do know that it showed unusual forethought and planning.

d. It is amazing to realize that of the 5,ooo men, besides women and children, who made up the audience that day, only this young boy had enough forethought to bring food for the day.

e. We do know that the lunch contained 5 barley loaves and two fish.

f. Most important of all, it was this lunch that our Lord used to feed the 5,000 men and the women and children who stood before Him hungry that day making it most famous lunch in all of history.

Important miracle because it is only one recorded in all four of the gospel accounts that Jesus performed.

This evening will use Mark’s account because it has the most detail - Mark 6:30-44

The Apostles return (30-33).

Jesus tells the Apostles (first time word used) to rest. (We, too, need quiet time.)

They cross the Sea of Galilee

He welcomed them (34-37).

Jesus’ response.

The unselfishness of Jesus.

We need to examine ourselves.

The Apostle’s response.

Canvass your own resources (38).

Always start with what you have before you ask God to give you more.

We wish we knew more of this unnamed Jewish boy.

The miracle (39-44).

Incidental lessons from the miracle.

Jesus did what God does on a grand scale.

The skeptic’s explanation.

Christ still feeds the multitudes today.

We need food today.

Jesus is the answer.
